As the world continues to become more digitally-connected and the dark web continues to grow in sophistication, the potential for tax evasion is becoming a growing concern for governments and tax authorities around the globe. The dark web is an anonymous network of websites that are hosted on networks that are not indexed by the major search engines and therefore not generally accessible to the public. Because of its anonymity, the dark web is a haven for criminals and is increasingly being exploited by those involved in tax evasion schemes.

Tax evasion on the dark web can take many forms, from ordering fake passports or driver’s licenses, to purchasing services and goods in virtual currencies that can’t be traced back to the buyer, to setting up anonymous shell companies through which to funnel income. For example, many digital assets, such as cryptocurrencies, exist largely untraceable on the dark web and have become a popular method for those looking to evade taxes.

Tax evasion on the dark web is unlikely to disappear in the near future, and it is clear that governments and tax authorities will need to continue to evolve their methods for uncovering and combating it. As the dark web becomes more sophisticated and as more individuals and organizations turn to it for transactions, governments and tax authorities will need to focus on monitoring and tracking transactions, using both traditional methods and sophisticated new technologies. Furthermore, education, both of potential evaders and of the general public, is key in helping to prevent the growth of tax evasion in the future.
